What is a Corneal Abrasion?
A corneal abrasion refers to a scratch on your eye which is caused by sand, dust, and other fine particles. Some of the common signs and symptoms of corneal abrasion are pan, tearing, redness, sensitivity to the light, irritation and a gritty feeling in the eye. It is quite common condition which can be healed by continuous blinking of the eyes, pulling the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid and rinsing the eye out with clean water. AVOID RUBBING THE EYES!
Most corneal abrasions are likely to heal within a day or two. Therefore, you can visit a doctor if the symptoms still persist after that time frame, or get worse. However, if your kids still feel there is something in the eye or it has caused redness, seek a medical help immediately. It could become corneal ulcer or lead to infection if left untreated.
How is Corneal Abrasion Treated?
A doctor will carefully assess the eye for hidden foreign particles and examine it for infections as well. An antibiotic drop or an antibiotic ointment can be prescribed. If a foreign body is found, they can remove it using a swab or irrigation. If these measures don’t work, a doctor can use a metal instrument such as an eye spud or a certain needle. If these instrument fails to work, then your kids can be referred to an ophthalmologist within 24 hours to remove the foreign body.
