It’s unfortunate that National Folic Acid Awareness Week is only recognized for just a week. Folic acid is important for women year-round! The CDC urges all women who can become pregnant to get 400 micrograms of folic acid every day to help reduce the risk for serious birth defects of a baby’s brain and spine.

It's national folic acid awareness week - women need to take folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects in babies.

Why is Folic Acid Important

Besides reducing the risk of birth defects, every woman needs folic acid every day. Whether planning to get pregnant or not, folic acid is required for the healthy new cells the body makes daily. Think about skin, hair, and nails. These – and other parts of the body – make new cells each day.

Facts About Folic Acid

How Much Folic Acid is Required
400 micrograms (mcg) every day.

When Should Women Start Taking Folic Acid
For folic acid to help prevent some major birth defects, a woman needs to start taking it at least one month before she becomes pregnant and while she is pregnant.

How Can Women Get Enough Folic Acid
There are several easy ways to be sure to get enough folic acid each day:

  • Take a vitamin that has folic acid in it every day. Check the label to be sure it contains 100% of the daily value (DV) of folic acid, which is 400 micrograms (mcg).
  • Eat a bowl of breakfast cereal that has 100% of the daily value of folic acid every day.
  • Make a great tasting smoothie – see the video below!
