Rapid Influenza Tests
Do you think that your kids have influenza? Let us help you determine it with a rapid influenza test and suggest the right treatment.
What is a Rapid Influenza Test?
Rapid influenza tests or Rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTS) are used to tell whether the person has influenza. These tests are done to determine the presence of influenza A and B viral nucleoprotein antigens found in respiratory specimens, and show the result positively or negatively.
How Rapid Influenza Test is Done?
Rapid Influenza tests or RIDTS are done by inserting a swab into the nostril to get a sample. The results might be provided within 10-15 minutes. When the sample is taken, your kid might feel a gagging sensation or a tickle when they feel a swab in their nose or throat.
When to Visit a Doctor
If you think your kid has influenza, make sure to visit a GP who can perform a test to confirm if your kid has influenza.
Influenza can be more critical in kids suffering from health conditions such as
- chronic respiratory conditions (including asthma)
- chronic heart disease
- chronic neurological or metabolic conditions
- chronic kidney or liver problems
- diabetes mellitus.
It can also be more aggravated in kids who have weak immune systems due to illness or medication. If your kids have any of these conditions and are suspected of influenza, visit your doctor as soon as possible.
What is Influenza?
Influenza (also known as the flu) is a viral infection that typically appears in the middle to late autumn and goes away in the spring.
It is a typical respiratory condition that affects the lungs and can result in headaches, fever, chills, muscle discomfort, tiredness, a stuffy nose, sore throat, and a cough. The flu’s symptoms are typically more severe and persistent than the flu-like symptoms brought on by a cold. Particularly among the very young, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems or pre-existing lung diseases, the flu and its complications can result in hospitalizations or even death.
How to Take Care of Your Kid with Influenza at Home?
Generally, most kids overcome influenza within a week without any treatment. Make sure your kid takes adequate rest and lots of fluids such as water.
They can be given paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain. BUT don’t give them aspirin as it might worsen the condition.
Visit the GP urgently if your child feels unwell or suffering from dehydration or troubled breathing. Maybe they need to admit to the hospital.
