Offering High Quality, Kid Friendly, and Convenient RSV Testing
What is Rapid RSV Testing?
Rapid RSV testing is done to determine whether a person has respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. Besides, the test also helps confirm if RSV season has started and tracked how it progresses in the community.
Talking about RSV, it is an infection that happened in the airways (the respiratory system). Although it is not serious, the symptoms like runny nose, coughing, congestion, and troubled breathing can be more severe in young kids, the elderly, and those with comprised immune systems.
How is Sample Collected for RSV Testing?
To collect the sample for RSV, a physician generally uses nasal aspirate or wash. In this process, a syringe is used to release a small amount of sterile saline into the nose followed by the application of gentle suction. This way, the resulting fluid is collected into a cup. However, a nasopharyngeal or NP swab might be used instead, although it is the least used method as it collects a smaller amount of the virus for the sample.
When RSV Testing is Required?
RSV tests are done usually during the cold and flu season occurring in late autumn to early spring. They are recommended for someone experiencing a lower respiratory infection and symptoms such as severe coughing, rapid breathing (usually in infants), headaches, fevers, a runny nose, a sore throat, and wheezing.
When the RSV has already been detected in the community, a rapid RSV test might be ordered to identify the suspected diagnosis in the patient. RSV testing might also be ordered with influenza testing if influenza has been detected in the community. If the cause of the infection is not clear, a strep test is also ordered.
How to Understand the Test Result?
A positive RSV test report means that the person has a respiratory syncytial virus. Negative rapid RSV, on the other hand, means that the symptoms are caused by something other than RSV.
How to Prepare Your Kid for Rapid RSV Testing?
When kids are prepared for Rapid RSV testing or any other medical test, they feel more comfortable and ready to cooperate.
- First of all, explain the procedure to them in detail. For example, tell them where they will go, who will check them, how long it will take, what will happen and how it may feel.
- Tell them this test is important to keep their body healthy.
- Reassure them that you will stay by their side during the test.
- Bring comfort items to the rapid RSV testing, such as their favorite stuffed toy.
