Foreign Objects in Noses, Ears, Eyes and Throat: What to Know

Kids are likely to insert small objects such as buttons, pieces of crayon, batteries, food, or toys into their mouth, nose, and ear, especially if they are bored or notice other kids doing the same thing. Sometimes, insects can get into their eyes, noses, and ear. Although it might be a normal habit, it can cause an emergency if that object is stuck in the wrong place, requiring them immediate medical assistance. These objects can make it hard to hear or breathe and cause infection if stuck in the ears or nose. When they are swallowed, it can lead to troubled breathing. If your kid has swallowed or inserted a foreign object in the nose, ear, and throat, or if you suspect they have done so, seek medical help immediately.

How Foreign Bodies are Removed

The technique to remove the foreign bodies is determined by the type of substance as well as its placement in the body. Tools such as tweezers or forceps can be used to remove objects from the ear and nose. Magnets are sometimes used if it is metal. To remove objects from the ears, the ear canal can be flushed with water. A suction machine can also be used to pull the objects out. If the object is swallowed, the kid might require general anesthesia and a certain process to remove it.
