Urinary catheterization refers to the process of inserting a urinary catheter (IDC) into the bladder through the urethra. It is done to carry your child’s urine from the bladder. The urine is collected into a drainage bag for disposal. The tube might come out through the kid’s abdomen and the urethra. It is often ordered when a patient is not able to empty their bladder.
Why Catheterization is Important for Kids?
Catheterization is performed for various purposes. For example, it is used to drain the urine buildup from the bladder or to treat any urinary problem. It also helps kids who are not able to a toilet generally.
How to Take Care of Your Kid with Catheterization at Home
Generally, catheters are removed by your doctor, but if your kid is required to leave a catheter in when they are at home, you will be advised how to care for the catheter and what to do if it comes out.
- Make sure to wash your hands before and after handling the catheter.
- The catheter tape should be kept securely.
- To help your kid urinate, make sure to hold the bag below the level of the bladder (may be on the floor if the child is sitting in a chair.)
- The tubing should become twisted or kinked in a spiral. This might restrict the flow of urine and lead to pain and discomfort.
- Tell your kids to take normal amounts of fluids.
In case of any doubt, make sure to contact your doctor.
