Winter Sports Physicals

Winter Sports Start Soon

Pumpkins, football, and new school shoes… It must be fall in full swing. That also means it is time to start thinking about winter sports physicals.

No, it is not too early. If your child plans to play basketball or compete in swimming and diving, dance or wrestling, come see us as soon as you can! Why do we recommend physicals this soon?

Screening for Medical Issues

In some cases, when we complete our sports evaluation, we may actually find a medical issue that needs to be addressed before your child can compete in a sport safely. If this is the case, we have time to help you treat your child before the season starts!

While we usually only find issues in a few cases, usually it is not something that would completely prevent your child from competing. But it may be something that needs to be addressed to keep them safe before the start of the season. For example, we make sure that the asthma is treated with an inhaler. Or that poor vision is corrected with sports glasses or contacts. This gives you and your child time to adjust to any treatment measures before practice starts.

What’s Involved?

Here are the main things we review during winter sports physicals:

  • Current diseases such as asthma, heart problems or diabetes
  • Family medical history
  • Past injuries, including concussions
  • Allergies
  • Surgeries and other hospitalizations
  • Medications, prescription, over the counter and supplements

We also take blood pressure, pulse, test vision, record height and weight, evaluate strength, reflexes and flexibility.
