What to Expect at Your Child’s First Pediatric Visit

Your baby’s first pediatric visit is a major milestone — and an important step in setting the foundation for lifelong health. Whether you’re a first-time parent or welcoming a new addition to your family, knowing what to expect at this initial appointment can ease anxiety and ensure you’re fully prepared. At Sun Pediatrics, we’re honored to guide parents through this special moment with care, compassion, and expert support.

When Does the First Pediatric Visit Happen?

Most newborns have their first pediatric appointment within 2–3 days after being discharged from the hospital. This early visit helps ensure your baby is adjusting well, feeding properly, and not showing signs of jaundice or other concerns.

If you’ve recently moved or transferred care, a first-time pediatric visit may also happen with older children — and we’re ready to meet them at any age. a man sitting on a bench next to a little boy

What Happens During the Appointment?

Your first visit will include:

  • A physical exam to check weight, length, head circumference, and reflexes

  • Feeding and sleeping guidance, including breastfeeding or formula questions

  • A review of newborn care essentials, from diapering to bathing

  • Time for you to ask questions — no concern is too small

  • A look at family medical history and vaccination planning

  • Screening for jaundice or feeding issues

  • A warm welcome from our pediatric team to make your family feel at home

We also offer educational materials and resources to help you navigate early parenthood with confidence.
