Worried about too much screen time?

In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere — from tablets and smartphones to TVs and computers. While technology can support learning and entertainment, excessive screen time may negatively impact sleep, attention, and social development. That’s why managing screen time for kids has become one of the top concerns for parents today.

At Sun Pediatrics, we help families find a healthy balance between screen use and other important aspects of childhood, like physical activity, play, sleep, and social interaction.

What Are the Screen Time Guidelines?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends:

  • Under 18 months: Avoid screen time, except for video chatting.

  • 18–24 months: Choose high-quality programming and watch it with your child.

  • 2–5 years: Limit to one hour per day of supervised, high-quality content.

  • 6 years and older: Set consistent limits that ensure time for sleep, schoolwork, physical activity, and socializing.

Even educational content should be balanced with other forms of learning and interaction.

Why Screen Time Limits Matter

Excessive screen use has been linked to:

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Delayed speech and language development

  • Decreased attention span

  • Reduced physical activity levels

By setting boundaries early and modeling healthy screen habits, parents can help their children use technology in a positive and productive way.

Pediatrician-Recommended Tips

  • Create “screen-free” zones, such as bedrooms and meal areas

  • Set a family media plan and stick to it

  • Encourage outdoor play and creative, hands-on activities

  • Use apps and shows that promote interaction and learning

  • Talk with your child about what they’re watching and why

Our team at Sun Pediatrics works with families to create personalized media strategies that fit their child’s age, temperament, and lifestyle.
