Navigating Cold and Flu Season – A Parent’s Guide

When to Worry About a Fever in Your Child

Discover Prevention Strategies

Each year, cold and flu season brings sniffles, coughs, and fevers that can spread quickly through schools and households. For parents, it’s important to know how to prevent illness, recognize symptoms early, and understand when to seek professional care. At Sun Pediatrics, we help families stay ahead of cold and flu season with trusted support and clear guidance.

Common Cold vs. The Flu – Know the Difference

While colds and the flu share similar symptoms, they are caused by different viruses and can affect children in unique ways.

  • Common Cold: Gradual onset; causes runny nose, sore throat, mild cough, and congestion. Typically mild.

  • Flu (Influenza): Sudden onset; includes high fever, body aches, fatigue, chills, and sometimes vomiting. Can lead to complications like pneumonia, especially in young children.

Knowing the difference helps you make informed decisions about care.

Tips for Prevention During Peak Season

  • Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water

  • Teach kids to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or elbows

  • Disinfect high-touch surfaces at home and school

  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms

  • Ensure your child receives their annual flu vaccine

  • Keep your child home from school if they are sick to prevent spreading germs

Good nutrition, rest, and proper hygiene are your child’s best defenses during the season.

When to Call Your Pediatrician

While many colds and mild flu cases resolve at home, contact your pediatrician if your child experiences:

  • High fever lasting more than 3 days

  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing

  • Dehydration signs (dry mouth, no tears, lethargy)

  • Persistent pain, earache, or sore throat

  • Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours

At Sun Pediatrics, we offer same-day sick visits and comprehensive care to get your child back on their feet.
